Kauai Island Utility Cooperative’s standard meter is a “smart meter,” a high-tech electronic device that enables efficient management of the electric grid and offers a variety of features that can help members manage their energy use and their electric bills.
These meters are a key component of the “smart grid,” technology that ensures that KIUC can effectively manage the real-time integration of renewable resources like solar and hydroelectric with its traditional power plants.
Smart meters also enable KIUC to offer features like energy usage tracking and history in 15-minute intervals; faster outage notification; same-day service activation and disconnection for moves and new accounts.
Members have the choice not to use a smart meter. For residential customers, there is a one-time set-up charge of $50.64 and a monthly $10.27 fee that covers some of the cost of manual meter-reading. Members can switch to a standard meter at any time without charge.
Members choosing to use a non-standard meter are required to fill out an application form that is available here: Election to use non-standard meter form
